What is ovarian cyst aspiration and sclerotherapy?
Ovarian cysts include functional cysts, endometriomas, dermoid cysts and other masses that require different decisions. Diagnosis comes before the choice of procedure.
In selected cases, image-guided aspiration removes cyst contents and a sclerosing agent such as ethanol treats the cyst cavity. This differs from aspiration alone and aims to reduce refilling while limiting removal of ovarian tissue. Recurrence remains possible.
An ovarian endometrioma is often called a chocolate cyst. Treating a suitable endometrioma cavity does not cure endometriosis elsewhere in the pelvis.
